Human Characteristic: Mackinac Bridge


Location: At the Straits of Mackinac on Interstate 75. The bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.

Date constructed: The bridge opened on November 1, 1957

Purpose: To connect the two peninsulas of Michigan and allow travel between them after a year-round boat service was determined to not be possible.

Other interesting information:
  • Third longest suspension bridge in the world.
  • It is 5 miles long.
  • The bridge had its 100 millionth crossing on June 25, 1998.
  • The bridge is also known as the Mighty Mac or Big Mac.
